Water cremation became legally recognised in Scotland on 2 March 2026, making it the first nation in the United Kingdom to provide a legal framework for this new funeral option. Funeral providers may establish services once they meet the necessary regulatory, environmental and licensing requirements.
England
Status: Not currently available
At present, England does not have a specific legal framework that permits water cremation.
The Law Commission has recommended creating legislation that would regulate new funeral methods, including alkaline hydrolysis, but no implementation date has yet been announced.
Wales
Status: Not currently available
The legal position in Wales currently follows that of England. While discussions continue about the future regulation of alternative funeral methods, water cremation is not yet available.
Northern Ireland

There is currently no legal framework allowing water cremation in Northern Ireland.
